For this event, we invited Counseling Psychologist Andy Lin from the Yun-Guang Counseling Center to deliver an engaging lecture to the faculty and students titled "Creating a Rainbow-Friendly Classroom: How Teachers Can Support Diverse Students." The session explored how educators can cultivate inclusive and safe learning environments on campus. At the beginning of the lecture, Psychologist Lin shared his extensive practical experience. He primarily works with adolescents and adults and has received rigorous professional training in areas including adult/adolescent sex counseling, couples counseling, and sex education. His counseling expertise focuses heavily on "gender diversity," "relationship issues," and "trauma healing." This professional background allowed him to guide the audience through a nuanced, psychological lens into the real-life situations faced by gender-diverse students on campus, as well as the supportive roles teachers should play. The most memorable highlight of the lecture was the core message Psychologist Lin conveyed on his presentation slides: "Please make sure to try hard, very hard, super hard to keep this firmly in mind—every single one of your feelings deserves to be valued." This statement serves not only as a gentle reminder to the audience, but also as the fundamental mindset teachers must adopt when engaging with LGBTQ+ or special-needs students. On campus, marginalized students often experience confusion, anxiety, or a lack of understanding from the outside world while exploring their self-identities. As educators, the primary task is to create a psychologically safe space—starting by accepting and validating the students' authentic feelings, letting them know that their emotions and very existence are permitted and cherished. Revolving around the theme of "supporting diversity," the lecture guided these future educators in considering how to put this philosophy into practice in their teaching environments. Creating a "rainbow-friendly classroom" requires teachers to possess a high degree of gender sensitivity to break down singular gender stereotypes. When equipped with these foundational psychological counseling concepts, teachers can become a solid support system on campus, catching students as they navigate identity struggles or interpersonal setbacks, thereby fostering a genuinely friendly and discrimination-free classroom atmosphere. Through Psychologist Lin's sharing of his practical experiences, this lecture not only deepened the participants' understanding of gender diversity and mental health, but also empowered educators with a gentle yet steadfast strength. True "friendliness" begins with seeing and empathizing. When teachers can genuinely value every one of their students' feelings, the classroom can transform into a safe haven where every unique child can grow with peace of mind.
