2019 APEC Conference on Smart Healthcare for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and their Risk Factors Prevention and Control

2019 APEC Conference on Smart Healthcare for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and their Risk Factors Prevention and Control Of 56.4 million global deaths, 39.5 million, or 70%, were due to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), and over three quarters of NCD deaths (30.7 million) occurred in low and middle-income economies in 2015. The cumulative economic loss is estimated to surpass US$ 7 trillion over the period 2011-2025. Among NCDs, Diabetes has been reported to be on the rise in many parts of the world in 2015, and the Asia Pacific region alone accounted for 36.9% of the total number of diabetics in the world. The prevention and early detection of diabetes are crucial to delay the disease’s progression and its adverse health effects. For individuals, diabetes prevention includes having a healthy diet, regular physical activity and avoidance of excessive weight gain. Whole economies’ and community programs will be crucial in raising awareness and enhancing prevention. Chinese Taipei proposes a project to provide APEC economies with a platform to share experience on diabetes prevention and control policy and discuss the strategies and actions on how to utilize Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to upgrade diabetes managements and diabetes-related risk factors prevention and control. The proposed conference will be held in Taipei during April or May 2019 and will include the following activities: (1) interactive sessions to exchange diabetes prevention and control policies plus ICT-based diabetes care and their risk factor prevention and control (2) site visits to smart cities and smart healthcare providers, such as hospitals, and communities.
