Depression is a symptom, not a normal part of aging. If ignored, medical treatment may be delayed. The elderly tend to downplay the severity of their symptoms, so judgments must be made based on objective clinical indicators rather than based on the elderly's main statements. Dementia is an irreversible degenerative disease that refers to a cluster of symptoms. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, and others include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and traumatic brain injury dementia.
