New generation of shrimp disease research and breeding strategies
Dr. Han-Ching Wang is currently a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biotechnology and Bioindustry Sciences at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Director of the NCKU International Center for Shrimp Aquaculture Research, and Director General of the National Central Library of Taiwan. Since 2000, she has focused on researching viral pathogens in shrimp, particularly white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). She was the first to discover an adaptive-like immune system in shrimp. By integrating systems biology, she further revealed that viruses in invertebrates can drive host aerobic glycolysis. In recent years, Dr. Wang has expanded her research into bacterial diseases in shrimp, utilizing microbiome studies to advance the field. Her findings have not only challenged traditional concepts of invertebrate immunology but have also broadened the understanding of metabolomics. In addition to her academic research, Dr. Wang is dedicated to applying her discoveries to the shrimp aquaculture industry. Through close collaboration with industry partners, she has helped improve the success rates of shrimp farming and promoted environmentally friendly, sustainable green aquaculture practices, providing strong support for the industry's future development.
