SDGs concept and curriculum design practice in Cambodia
The final session of the 2024 “Creating a Sustainable Future SDGs Workshop” featured Professor Jian-Zhi Chen, a retired faculty member from our department and the current Director of the Environmental Education Center, as the keynote speaker. He shared insights on “Integrating SDG Concepts into Curriculum Design through Practical Application.” Professor Chen began by introducing the core themes of environmental education within Taiwan’s 12-Year Basic Education Curriculum, then expanded the discussion to include sustainability topics. He provided an in-depth explanation of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how these goals are currently being implemented in elementary schools. Following this, Professor Chen showcased several lesson plans for developing environmental education curricula. He emphasized that when designing these plans, it is essential to consider participants’ cognitive development levels, select appropriate teaching strategies, design instructional modules, create worksheets, and conduct assessments of teaching effectiveness. Finally, he guided participants in hands-on lesson plan writing, enabling them to learn how to effectively integrate SDGs into curriculum design through practical application.
