Decathlon's Sustainability Strategy and Outlook

The lecturer shares insights with students on the integration of "sustainable development" and "sports brands," as well as current trends. The presentation begins with the definition of sustainable development, a concept that has become increasingly challenging to define. Originally centered around human-centric ideas, it has evolved over time to include the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). But why integrate sustainability with sports brands today? This can be discussed from three perspectives: (1) Sports (and fashion) brands are among the largest contributors to unsustainability; (2) human awareness of the necessity of environmental sustainability is growing; and (3) government regulations play a passive role in enforcing sustainable practices. Aside from Decathlon, other well-known sports brands such as Patagonia and Nike have also launched sustainability initiatives. These efforts not only contribute positively to the planet but also offer consumers a chance to redefine sustainability. How can sports brands achieve sustainability? They can start with products, using more eco-friendly materials; they can also consider the circular economy approach, encouraging repairs and second-hand sales. Additionally, brands can address human rights issues, promoting equal advancement opportunities for both genders. Decathlon is currently implementing several sustainability practices, including procuring green electricity, managing waste, and an innovative eco-commuting initiative that provides environmental commuting subsidies to employees who use eco-friendly methods to travel to and from work. Decathlon also aims to develop more eco-friendly designs and extend product life through repairs and second-hand sales.
