Principles and Experiment of Refraction Seismology
This lecture will be conducted as part of the sophomore geophysics course in the Department of Earth Sciences, with the topic "Principles and Experiment of Refraction Seismology." The event is scheduled from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The activity aims to introduce the principles and applications of refraction seismology and provide participants with hands-on experience in seismic survey experiments. The lecture will begin by explaining the differences between artificial seismic waves and natural seismic waves, followed by an introduction to the necessary equipment for seismic surveys, including seismic sources, geophones, signal cables, and data recorders. It will also cover the planning and design of field experiments, the setup process for survey lines, and key considerations for conducting surveys. During the practical session, participants will work in groups to set up survey lines, generate artificial seismic sources by striking a steel plate with a hammer, and record seismic wave propagation data. By combining theoretical knowledge and practical experience, participants will learn the implementation of seismic survey techniques, deepen their understanding of subsurface structure exploration, and build a foundation for future research or applications.
