【USR Hub】"Taipei City University 1+101" Taipei Net-Zero Collaboration Platform Project - Net-Zero Transition: Public and Private Sectors Acting Together – Trends, Impacts, and Response Actions

Taiwan is gradually moving toward its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. On June 15, 2024 (Saturday) from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM, the Department of Social and Public Affairs at Taipei University will host an online seminar titled "Net-Zero Transition: Public and Private Sectors Acting Together – Trends, Impacts, and Response Actions." The seminar will feature Dr. Lin Tzu-Lun, Associate Professor of the Department of Political Science at National Taiwan University, Director of Taiwan Power Company, and former spokesperson for the Executive Yuan, with Professor Lee Tien-Shen as the moderator. In the face of global warming, climate change has transformed from a scientific issue to an international political agenda. Governments and businesses worldwide are facing unprecedented challenges in the trends of decarbonization and energy transition. In the seminar, Professor Lin will share his in-depth insights into climate politics and net-zero transitions, analyzing the impacts these trends will have on the global and Taiwanese contexts. He will outline seven key trends, including the effects of decarbonization on global geopolitics, the necessity of energy transition, the arrival of carbon pricing, and the key role of businesses in climate action. Additionally, Professor Lin will guide the audience through the international negotiation process from the 1997 Kyoto Protocol to the 2015 Paris Agreement, exploring the contributions and shortcomings of various international agreements in achieving global carbon reduction targets. He will also provide a detailed explanation of the concepts of "net-zero emissions" and "carbon neutrality," emphasizing the importance of negative carbon technologies and natural carbon sinks in achieving net-zero emissions. In the Taiwanese context, Professor Lin will elaborate on the four strategies and two foundations proposed by the Taiwanese government to achieve the 2050 net-zero goal, including energy transformation, industrial transformation, lifestyle transformation, and social transformation. He will emphasize the key roles of technological research and climate legislation within these strategies. He will also share Taiwan’s twelve key strategic actions for achieving net-zero by 2050, ranging from green energy development to just transition, demonstrating Taiwan's comprehensive planning and practical steps in this process. As the event draws to a close, Professor Lin will conclude with an inspiring quote: "The 2050 global net-zero transition requires imagination and creativity. It's not just about technological transformation; we also need new modes of thinking, new ways of living, social transformation, and changes in business models." This quote reminds us that in the face of the complex and daunting challenge of climate change, traditional methods are no longer enough; we need to boldly explore new paths to achieve a sustainable future.
