【USR Hub】The “Tianmu Studies” Based on Culture, Life, and Environment: Imagining Low-Carbon Resilient Communities and Local Livable Systems - Local Knowledge Exploration and Walkthrough: Urban Gardens and Tianmu Ancient Trail
The day began with Assistant Professor Lin Zichao from Cultural University explaining contemporary urban farms, guiding participants through the Quanyuanli Farm to explore the modern urban farm concept and the restoration efforts of the Caoshan Tangerine. Participants learned about the origins and historical background of this ancient variety and its significance for biodiversity conservation. Following this, under the guidance of Professor Lin, participants explored why local citrus farmers on Yangmingshan had transitioned from growing Caoshan Tangerines to Dazhong varieties, and discussed the environmental and socio-economic impacts of this change, including evaluating its effects on ecological balance and possible preventive measures. Not only did participants gain an understanding of the environment, but they also delved into the current sales channels for citrus products, particularly the business model of honesty stores and pay-what-you-want initiatives. Discussions focused on how these innovative marketing methods inspire sustainable agricultural development, and participants gained further insights into eco-friendly control measures. Finally, Li Jianxing, the USR project manager from Cultural University, and Wu Suting, the project manager from the Taiwan Local Sustainable Design Association, each provided a historical overview of the Meiguan area and the Tianmu Ancient Trail. After a full day of exploration and walking, participants had the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of urban farms and ancient varieties, as well as to reflect on how to protect and promote the sustainable use of these resources. **Itinerary:** - 8:50 AM: Gather outside the Hongtan Building at Taipei City University (bus arrives by 8:50 AM) - 9:00 AM: Depart from Taipei City University ➡️ Farm (No. 230, Lane 3, Fuxing 3rd Road, Beitou District) - 9:40 AM: Arrive at the farm (stay for about 1 hour): Professor Lin Zichao explains contemporary urban farming - 12:40 PM: Depart from the farm ➡️ Yangmingshan Catholic Church (No. 8, Aifu 2nd Street) - 1:00 PM: Lunch at the church ➡️ Meiguan Walk: Professor Li Jianxing explains the history of Meiguan - 2:00 PM: Tianmu Ancient Trail ➡️ Head of Tianmu Ancient Trail: Professor Wu Suting explains the history of the trail - 3:00 PM: Head of Tianmu Ancient Trail ➡️ Taipei City University (bus waits at Lane 232, Section 7, Zhongshan North Road)
