On Tuesday, August 13, 2024, under the invitation of the Ministry of Education's University Social Responsibility (USR) Promotion Center, we participated online in the 113th Annual USR Joint Empowerment Activity: "USR and the Future of Higher Education in Taiwan." This event focused on sustainable development topics, including local care, environmental sustainability, industrial linkages and economic sustainability, health promotion and food safety, cultural sustainability, and other forms of social practice. The USR Promotion Center, in collaboration with universities implementing USR projects, organized this platform for nationwide universities to share new insights, exchange experiences, and explore issues. The goal was to address real-world challenges in local engagement, talent cultivation, and international collaboration while providing strategic tools and fostering institutional reforms to make universities more flexible and impactful in fulfilling meaningful social responsibilities. Key Themes and Objectives: The event addressed the question: What opportunities can USR bring to the future of higher education in Taiwan? With the fourth phase of the USR project approaching, the activity centered on the sustainable development of USR across universities in Taiwan. University presidents with outstanding and sustainable USR initiatives shared their insights and engaged in dialogues on practical strategies for integrating USR into Taiwan’s higher education system and university development. The event invited key stakeholders—presidents, vice presidents, and senior administrators—to participate actively. Learning Objectives included: How USR-driven engaged scholarship and talent cultivation can provide opportunities for university sustainability and transformation. Strategies for planning the next phase of USR projects, including reflections on past efforts and future developments in extending USR into university governance. The critical roles of presidents and senior administrators in advancing USR and sustainability. Key Takeaways: The participation of the project team in the fifth session: "USR and the Future of Higher Education in Taiwan" underscored the importance of USR in shaping the development of higher education in Taiwan. Through expert presentations, the team gained valuable insights into how integrating USR into academic curricula and research not only promotes sustainable social development but also enhances students' sense of social responsibility. The event inspired the team to explore better ways to implement social responsibility in education while fostering closer ties between campuses and their surrounding communities. It was a thought-provoking and constructive experience that pointed the way forward for future educational innovation.
