Social Prescription Workshop

This course is designed to guide students in understanding the diverse aspects of social welfare systems for people with disabilities, and to grasp the value of "social prescribing" in promoting psychological and social well-being. Starting from theoretical foundations and incorporating real-life case studies, the course helps students build a comprehensive perspective on policy advocacy, cultural equity, and community care. Professor Wang first introduces the U.S. private health insurance system, the U.K.'s universal healthcare system, and Taiwan’s hybrid model, emphasizing that social welfare is a basic right for all, not merely a form of subsidy or assistance. Following that, Dr. Liu shares the concept of "social prescribing," explaining how social connections—through art, cultural activities, and community engagement—can enhance the mental health and well-being of older adults and individuals with dementia. Lastly, Professor Huang presents how museums can serve as platforms for cultural equity and health promotion, showcasing various inclusive designs and innovative programs that support people with disabilities and dementia. Overall, the course deepens students’ understanding of welfare systems and interdisciplinary intervention strategies. It encourages them to consider how to combine professional knowledge with social care in future efforts to support marginalized groups and contribute to public service.
