Services and reflections of full-day institutions for the mentally disabled-sharing of work experience at Leshan Correctional Institution
This course aims to guide students in gaining an in-depth understanding of the care services and operational realities provided to individuals with intellectual disabilities in residential institutions, and to reflect on the advantages and challenges of institutional care systems from the perspective of practitioners. Through a sharing session by Executive Director Zhang from the Palliative Care Foundation, students learn about the practical needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities in areas such as daily living care, medical coordination, psychological support, and interpersonal interactions. They also gain insights into how institutional workers maintain service quality and respect for the autonomy of the individuals they care for, despite limited resources and high caregiving pressure. The lecture also discusses the relationship between institutions and the community, reflecting on how, under current welfare policies and social resource conditions, it is possible to promote human-centered care, deinstitutionalization, and social integration within the existing system. Through sharing real-world experiences, students not only gain an understanding of the basic operational logic of social welfare institutions but also develop empathy and critical reflection on emotional and ethical aspects. This provides an important foundation for future work in practical services or policy advocacy.
