UT Promotes Indigenous Language Education and Cultural Heritage, Awarded the 2025 Indigenous Language Revitalization Group Award
To showcase the revitalization and development of indigenous languages and to respond to UNESCO's designation of February 21 as International Mother Language Day, the Council of Indigenous Peoples held the 2025 International Mother Language Day – Indigenous Language Revitalization Awards Ceremony at the Grand Hotel Taipei on February 21, 2025. The event recognized outstanding individuals and organizations for their contributions to the promotion of indigenous languages. The University of Taipei was awarded the Indigenous Language Revitalization Group Award in recognition of its long-standing dedication to language education and cultural preservation. President Chiu Ying-Hao stated that the University of Taipei has been actively advancing indigenous language development and cultural transmission, aiming to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Currently, the university has 382 indigenous students, accounting for 4.4% of the total student population—one of the highest among the 28 universities in Taipei. Through the offering of indigenous language courses, provision of learning resources, and organization of cultural events, the university encourages students to connect with and carry forward their cultural heritage. It also promotes indigenous education for all, helping faculty and students appreciate the value of Taiwan's multiculturalism. The university’s Indigenous Student Resource Center (ISRC) serves as a key platform for promoting indigenous education, offering six core functions: academic support, psychological care, cultural preservation, social engagement, and more. In recent years, through academic tutoring, scholarships, and the formation of learning communities, the center has significantly improved students' academic adaptation, graduation rates, and cultural identity. The university continues to offer indigenous language courses and hosts traditional skill workshops, including indigenous songs, weaving, and musical instrument training. In 2023, students from the University of Taipei won first place in the national intercollegiate indigenous music and dance competition, highlighting the strong outcomes of their learning. Additionally, in collaboration with student clubs, the university released its first student-produced indigenous language album, injecting creativity and innovation into language learning. Beyond campus, the University of Taipei actively collaborates with external organizations to broaden the cultural impact. Partnering with the Taipei City Government, the university co-hosted the city's first Indigenous Youth Consensus Forum, inviting tribal elders and cultural experts to engage in dialogue with students, fostering deeper cultural identity. It also co-organized an annual music festival with six other universities, allowing indigenous culture to shine through music, dance, and the arts, enhancing public understanding and respect for indigenous heritage. In 2024, the university’s efforts were highlighted in interviews by four media outlets and two radio stations. To cultivate indigenous teaching professionals, the university’s Center for Teacher Education designs specialized courses and internship opportunities, empowering students to become key agents of cultural transmission while learning the language. The university also encourages non-indigenous students to learn indigenous languages through coursework, cultural events, and immersive language camps—fostering cross-cultural understanding and harmony. Looking ahead, the University of Taipei remains committed to deepening the development of indigenous languages and cultural heritage. By integrating academic resources with community partnerships, the university will continue to provide diverse learning opportunities for indigenous students and promote broader recognition and respect for indigenous cultures, guided by its commitment to university social responsibility.
