2025 Experiential Education in SEL

The main purpose of this activity is to guide both teachers and students in learning social and emotional skills through experiential education. The first half of the session introduces the connection between experiential learning and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). Participants then engage in a hands-on activity called “Crossing the Minefield.” In the second half, participants are led through a guided reflection on their experiences during the activity. Sample discussion questions include: Who was the first person to go in each group? Who went last? What were the most memorable thoughts and emotions during the process? Following the reflection, the facilitator reveals the intention behind the activity and introduces deeper themes for discussion — such as how we deal with mistakes. Participants are invited to connect the activity to real-life experiences of making errors, facing uncertainty, and discovering the value of failure through experience. The session concludes with practical suggestions for using experiential activities with students, including tools such as the 4F debriefing method and "Failure Reflection Cards."
