【USR】Integration and Diffusion of Medical-Elderly Care and Higher Education Perspectives: Constructing a Social Prescription and Linking Worker Innovation and Development Hub - Services and Reflections on Full-Time Residential Institutions for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities

This lecture aimed to guide students in gaining an in-depth understanding of the care services provided to individuals with intellectual disabilities in full-time residential institutions, as well as the real-world operation of such facilities. From the perspective of frontline practitioners, the session encouraged reflection on the strengths and challenges of the institutional care system. Through a presentation by Executive Director Chang from the Hospice Foundation of Taiwan, who shared her experiences working at Lok Shan Training Institute, students gained insight into the actual needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities in areas such as daily living assistance, medical coordination, psychological support, and social interaction. The lecture also shed light on how institutional staff manage to uphold service quality and respect the autonomy of service users under conditions of limited resources and high care demands. The discussion further explored the connection between institutions and the wider community, encouraging students to critically consider how person-centered care, deinstitutionalization, and social inclusion can be advanced within existing welfare policies and social resource structures. Through the sharing of real-world experiences, students not only developed a foundational understanding of how social welfare institutions operate, but also cultivated empathy and ethical reflection—essential groundwork for future careers in direct service or policy advocacy.
