The road to recovery for severely emotionally handicapped adolescents: a collaborative model between special education and psychiatric care
The presenter introduced the work and services provided by Taoyuan Psychiatric Center for children with emotional and mental disorders. It explains why adolescents with such conditions urgently need support, and helps the audience understand the purpose, significance, and services offered by the hospital-based school. In addition, it outlined how the institution collaborated with mainstream schools to address the needs of these children. Beyond helping audience comprehend the integration of psychiatric care and special education, it also gives them insight into the treatment practices within the institution, exploring how the center supports children diagnosed with related disorders. The services provided by Taoyuan Psychiatric Center for children with emotional and mental disorders include: (1) Diagnostic analysis through the Youth School Program and the Youth Wellness School. (2) Therapeutic and activity-based services provided through the day hospital program (such as day hospitalization model, Saturday group therapy sessions, activities designed to enhance recovery and experiential learning, expressive therapies, dialectical behavior therapy, external therapy services, lectures, and parent-child counseling sessions). (3) Gradual school reintegration support: Communicating and coordinating with schools to assist children in returning to their original school step-by-step.
