History of Mathematics: Mathematics is Interesting, Real, and Useful (in that very order)
The speaker places the history of mathematics at the center, presenting mathematics as not only interesting, real, and practical, but also multifaceted. The content spans from ancient Greek Elements to China’s Sunzi Suanjing, covering the theoretical developments of Euclid, Galileo, Hamilton, and others, and extends to modern efforts in popularizing mathematics and its interdisciplinary applications. The speaker emphasizes the role of mathematical narratives, using classical problems and everyday examples—such as card games, paper size ratios, and mathematical magic—to demonstrate the wonder and elegance of mathematics. The talk also introduces initiatives by the Taiwanese Society for the History and Pedagogy of Mathematics, including the Math Taiwan Museum and various reading programs, advocating reading and storytelling as effective means for fostering mathematical learning. In addition, it explores the cross-disciplinary connections of mathematics with art, design, and biology, illustrating with concrete cases how mathematical theory deepens our understanding of the real world. Finally, the speaker stresses that mathematics education should integrate history, culture, and narrative to cultivate students’ critical thinking and interdisciplinary literacy, thereby highlighting the value of mathematics as a human intellectual endeavor and its infinite potential for future development.
