Understanding the different faces of common LLM generative AI

Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) represents a major milestone in modern technological development, profoundly reshaping education, industry, and daily life. This talk introduced the evolution, principles, and practical applications of generative AI, with a particular focus on five leading Large Language Model (LLM) systems—ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity AI, and Microsoft Copilot. The session covered: The historical evolution of AI—from the Turing Test to the Generative AI era; The definition and categories of Generative AI—text, image, music, video, and code generation; Comparative analysis of major platforms in terms of model architecture, multimodal capabilities, search integration, and user scenarios; Effective prompt engineering—how to design prompts to obtain optimal AI-generated outcomes; Practical use cases in education and research, such as academic writing, course design, and creative media production. By the end of this lecture, participants gained a comprehensive understanding of generative AI technologies, learned to distinguish platform-specific strengths, and develop the ability to apply AI.
