Introduction to Firefighting Work, Career Development, and Occupational Physical Training

This lecture, delivered by Coach Lu Wei-Gang of the Taiwan Pioneers (along with his teammates), gave students a new understanding of the firefighting profession and the concept of tactical fitness training. The Taiwan Pioneers is a team composed of professional firefighters and volunteer firefighters, dedicated to promoting the professionalization and scientific development of firefighter training, and representing Taiwan in international competitions such as the World Police and Fire Games. Coach Lu explained that the 2015 Taoyuan Bowling Alley Fire, which tragically claimed six firefighters’ lives, led many to reflect on traditional training methods and ultimately inspired the formation of the Taiwan Pioneers. He emphasized that firefighter training is not just about running or weightlifting—it must closely mirror real-life tasks, such as carrying hoses, dragging dummies, climbing ladders, and walking with heavy loads. These drills simulate actual fireground movements, and the goal of training is not about achieving scores or honors, but rather to “ensure that every firefighter and their teammates can return home safely.” During the lecture, Coach Lu also introduced the firefighter recruitment and training process. To become a firefighter, candidates must pass both written exams and physical tests, including weighted running, climbing, and rescue simulations. After joining the fire department, firefighters undergo daily high-intensity physical training while mastering firefighting, first aid, and decision-making under pressure. Coach Lu’s teammates also shared their experiences representing Taiwan at the World Police and Fire Games, an international event that gathers elite firefighters from around the world. The competitions include weighted runs, ladder climbs, hose carries, equipment striking simulations, and dummy rescues, testing participants’ endurance, speed, coordination, and teamwork. They mentioned how impressed they were by the professionalism and efficiency of foreign firefighters, which inspired them to continue improving and showcase Taiwan’s strength on the global stage. This lecture left a deep impression on the students, allowing them to truly appreciate the dedication, professionalism, and courage of firefighters. They are not only symbols of bravery but also highly trained professionals who face danger with preparation and teamwork. As one firefighter said, “Courage is not the absence of fear, but the choice to move forward despite it.” Listening to their stories deepened everyone’s respect for this profession and reminded us that with passion and responsibility, anyone can become a “pioneer” in their own field.
