Actuary: A Worthwhile Professional Career

Actuaries are recognized as “guardians of social and financial risk,” applying mathematics, statistics, and financial theories to evaluate uncertainty and support critical decision-making for insurance, government, and financial institutions. This presentation introduces the actuarial profession, the qualification pathways in Taiwan and international bodies (SOA/CAS), and the competencies needed to build a successful actuarial career. Key topics include actuarial practice areas—product pricing, reserving, asset-liability management, solvency assessment, risk management, and regulatory compliance—along with training resources, exam requirements, and internship opportunities. Actuaries combine analytical rigor with business insight, communication skills, and professional ethics, enabling them to make meaningful contributions across industries such as life insurance, property & casualty insurance, reinsurance, consulting, and public agencies. This talk aims to help students assess their fit for the actuarial profession, understand the challenges and rewards of the exam journey, and develop a roadmap toward a prestigious, globally recognized, and socially impactful career path. Individuals who are disciplined, numerically inclined, and motivated by problem-solving will find an intellectually fulfilling and financially rewarding future in actuarial science.
