From Soundscapes to Water Sounds: Embarking on a Sensory Environmental Journey,Part One: The Direction of Sound - Ambient Sound and Urban Landscape

Led by Professor Chien-Chih Chen, this course invited students to explore soundscapes across Taipei and its neighboring areas. The first stop was the Yuanshan Shell Mound Cultural Site, where students sensed traces of old Taipei and visited the Huaguo Zen Temple and Yuanshan Expo Park — a quiet oasis occasionally interrupted by airplane sounds, embodying the city’s balance between serenity and noise. The second stop was Shezi Island, where mangroves and riverside breezes created a soothing soundscape mixed with unexpected construction noises. The third stop, Chuhuangkeng Farm, offered a tranquil retreat where students enjoyed a local lunch and followed the host through hidden trails, listening to bubbling sulfur springs, running streams, cars on distant roads, and chirping wildlife. Students recorded and analyzed these sounds with mobile apps, discovering how attentive listening transforms environmental awareness and reveals the harmony of urban and natural acoustics.
