Individual / Nation / Body and History
This course, themed “Individual / Nation / Body and History,” guided students through textual discussions and teacher-student interactions to reflect on how their bodily experiences in martial arts classes intersect with broader historical, cultural, and national imaginaries. The class, led by Professor Chen Si-Qi, incorporated thematic elements from contemporary wuxia novels and fantasy narratives, such as “heroes,” “brotherhood,” “emotions,” and “saving the world,” encouraging students to connect familiar cultural symbols to their self-identity and bodily practice in reality. Discussions also examined the interplay between modernity and wuxia, exploring how national identity is shaped within wuxia narratives and how the martial arts body carries patriotic sentiment or personal heroic aspirations. The classroom atmosphere was open and highly participatory, with students encouraged not only to share their personal martial arts experiences but also to extend their reflections on the relationship between body and history through stories, narratives, and character analysis. Overall, this course offered a blend of critical thinking and experiential learning, serving as a dialogue between culture and the body.
