Education and Career Advancement Guidebook
This talk mainly focused on the speaker’s academic and career journey, as well as practical strategies that university students can use when preparing for further studies or entering the job market. The speaker, a graduate of the Department of Recreation and Sport Management at University of Taipei, has worked in public relations and the startup industry, and has extensive experience in interviewing, career consulting, and academia. Drawing from her own path, she explained how she began building industry experience, portfolios, and skills during her undergraduate years, and later, after completing her master’s degree, navigated uncertainty, job searching, internship applications, and eventually the decision to pursue a doctoral degree. Ultimately, she made her career choices based on three principles: interest, capability, and opportunity. Regarding preparation for jobs or graduate studies, she emphasized the importance of first understanding the target company or academic program, including its products or services, faculty, and research directions. Application materials—such as résumés, personal statements, or graduate school documents—should be precise, data-driven, highlight key competencies, and avoid irrelevant content or errors. A one-page résumé is recommended, containing basic information, relevant skills, work experience, and concrete achievements. Once invited to an interview, students should understand the interview format, be aware of job requirements, and present their value through clear, well-organized experience-based stories. Overall, this talk provided students with practical guidance and a clearer direction for planning their future academic and career decisions.
