Higher Education Deepening Lecture Series - Yun-Shan Pao“Fundamental Training and Cultural Aesthetics of Han–Tang Dance”
Centering on Han–Tang dance, this course guides students through systematic foundational training to enter the physical style and aesthetic spirit of ancient Chinese court music and dance. Teaching progresses step by step, from basic postures and movement lines to the cultivation of bodily rhythm, leading students to understand the distinctive physical vocabulary of Han–Tang dance. The course places special emphasis on the interconnection between form and intent: sensing vitality and inner resonance through gracefully unfolding movements, and experiencing cultural aesthetic imagery through grounded, restrained postures. Through hands-on practice, students learn not only the accuracy of movement, but also the cultural context behind it—for example, how the Han dynasty’s simplicity and grandeur, and the Tang dynasty’s richness and elegance, shape differing bodily styles. Through repeated practice, students are able to complete short movement combinations and experience the expansiveness, roundness, and sense of momentum emphasized in Han–Tang dance. Beyond technical training, the course also incorporates videos, examples, and live demonstrations to cultivate students’ visual sensitivity in appreciating Han–Tang music and dance, enabling them to recognize stylistic differences and aesthetic characteristics across historical periods.
