AI and Social Science Research: An Introduction to Commonly Used Tools, Applications, and Hands-on Practice

The Department of Social and Public Affairs at the University of Taipei is hosting an event titled “AI and Social Science Research: An Introduction to Commonly Used Tools, Applications, and Hands-on Practice.” The event features Mr. Wei-Sheng Cheng (Vista Cheng), a renowned AI instructor and lecturer in the Department of Journalism at Shih Hsin University, who will guide participants in systematically exploring the practical applications and potential of artificial intelligence in social science research. As AI technologies continue to advance rapidly, social science research is undergoing significant transformations in data collection, analytical methods, and research efficiency. This event therefore focuses on how AI tools can be effectively leveraged to support research design, text analysis, data organization, and the generation of research insights. The program is designed around the practical needs of social science researchers. It will introduce commonly used and highly practical AI tools, explain their key features and appropriate use cases, and, through concrete examples, demonstrate how AI can assist researchers with literature review, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, and the optimization of research workflows. In addition to tool introductions, the speaker will share hands-on experience and practical insights, helping participants develop a sound understanding of AI usage, including its limitations and ethical considerations, to avoid overreliance or misuse. This event adopts a practice-oriented teaching approach, encouraging participants to engage in hands-on exercises and immediately apply what they learn to real research scenarios, thereby enhancing their practical skills. It is well suited for faculty members, students, and researchers interested in AI, social science research methods, data analysis, or interdisciplinary applications. Through this event, participants are expected to strengthen their understanding and application of AI tools and to further promote innovation and deeper development in social science research in the digital era.
