[Lecture] No More #MeToo: Common Gender Equity Issues and Legal Awareness on Campus
To enhance awareness of gender equality on campus and strengthen students' and faculty's understanding of relevant regulations, the Department of Earth and Life Science hosted a lecture titled "Let’s End #MeToo: Common Gender Equity Issues and Legal Regulations on Campus" in Room S107 of the Science Building on the afternoon of December 16. The event featured Ms. Chen Yi-Chun, a lawyer with extensive practical experience, as the keynote speaker. The session aimed to analyze common gender equity disputes and legal boundaries within the campus context through a professional legal lens. Ms. Chen used the high-profile "#MeToo" movement as a starting point to provide a comprehensive yet accessible explanation of gender equality regulations, specifically detailing the application of the Gender Equity Education Act in educational settings. During the lecture, Ms. Chen not only elaborated on the legal definitions of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and sexual bullying but also incorporated real-world case studies. She analyzed interactions between teachers and students, as well as among peers, to illustrate behaviors that may constitute an infringement on another's bodily autonomy. She emphasized that many gender equity incidents stem from a discrepancy in understanding "personal boundaries"; therefore, establishing the concept of "Affirmative Consent" is crucial. As evidenced by the event photos, student participation was enthusiastic, with Room S107 packed to capacity. Throughout the two-hour session, attendees demonstrated a high level of concentration. In addition to listening attentively to Ms. Chen’s legal analysis, many students diligently took notes, reflecting the importance they place on safeguarding their rights and understanding gender equity issues. This educational lecture not only helped faculty and students clarify various ambiguous legal misconceptions but also provided correct response channels and resources for seeking help when facing gender equity incidents. It is hoped that through the dissemination of legal knowledge, "Let's End #MeToo" will become more than just a slogan—transforming into concrete actions implemented in campus life to jointly foster a learning environment defined by mutual respect, friendliness, and safety.
