Meaning Generation and Life Healing: On the Integration of Chinese Philosophy and Logotherapy
This research institute lecture features Professor Luo Yachun from Tamkang University presenting on “Meaning Generation and Life Healing: On the Integration of Chinese Philosophy and Logotherapy.” Professor Luo begins by introducing Viktor Frankl's experience of surviving Nazi concentration camps, which led to the creation of “logotherapy.” From this starting point, she traced the development of Frankl's “logotherapy” within Taiwan's academic circles, highlighting its introduction by scholars such as Professor Fu Weixun and Professor Lin Anwu. Subsequently, within a comparative framework of Eastern and Western philosophy, she explored the convergence between Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist thought and “logotherapy,” thereby promoting a mind-body therapeutic philosophy rooted in Eastern philosophical traditions. It demonstrates an Eastern approach to meaning-centered therapy by emphasizing Confucian “benevolence” (ren) for ethical and moral cultivation, Daoist ‘compassion’ (ci) for unlocking the mysteries of the natural cosmos, and Buddhist “compassion” (karuna) for deepening the analysis of mind-body consciousness. The lecture also introduces key works by important scholars such as Frank, Fu Weixun, Lin Anwu, and Yuan Baoxin, providing guidance for attendees seeking to explore this field independently.
