The Higher Education Sprout Project Micro-Credit Course “Translating Cultural Memory: An Exploration of Tang Dynasty Yan Music and Dance”
The micro-credit course begins with an exploration of the movement aesthetics of Tang Dynasty Yan music and dance, closely examining the beauty of rhythm, lines, and postures. Tang dynasty dance is often imagined as lavish and exuberant, yet the actual movements are largely hidden in historical texts, murals, and visual sources, requiring careful analysis to understand. By studying the use of body weight, the extension of arms and sleeves, and the relationship between movement and musical rhythm, participants can appreciate the flow and coherence of the dance while gaining insight into the aesthetic values and everyday life of the period. The course then moves into a stage of movement replication, practicing gradually from basic stances and footwork to coordination of the arms and body. Replication does not aim for exact reproduction; rather, it emphasizes understanding the rhythm and bodily language of the movements through imitation. Through repeated practice, the dance’s lightness, elegance, and subtle rhythmic quality gradually emerge, revealing how ancient dancers expressed emotions and ritual propriety through the body, transforming the dance from historical images into an experience that can be felt and imagined. Finally, participants explore movements of banquet dances, experiencing the lively and joyful atmosphere embedded in the performance. The gestures and body lines convey both elegance and the celebratory, ritualistic spirit of the banquet. Through physical practice, the rhythm, flow, and cultural significance of the dance become embodied, bridging the gap between history and the present. Overall, the course deepens understanding of the characteristic movements of Tang Yan dance while offering a way to physically experience cultural memory, bringing the aesthetics and spirit of ancient dance vividly to life.
