114 Years of USR - Youth Placement Agency and Case Sharing
This class featured psychiatrist Dr. Chou Po-ching and a teenager who had lived in a placement facility, who shared their observations and experiences regarding "home-based living." Dr. Chou explained from a professional perspective the common psychological conditions among teenagers in placement facilities, such as traumatic experiences, attachment breakdowns, and low self-esteem, emphasizing the importance of companionship and trust in adolescent recovery. He pointed out that while the institutional system has a protective function, without emotional connection, it often fails to promote genuine change. The teenager then shared his personal experiences in the facility, from initial distrust and rejection to gradually building stability with the support of teachers and social workers. He frankly admitted to feeling lost and wanting to escape, but also to rethinking his future because someone was willing to truly listen. Finally, he encouraged students to look beyond behavior and understand the stories behind it when engaging in helping work in the future. This sincere and moving sharing session allowed university students to gain a more concrete understanding of the realities and psychological dynamics within placement facilities, fostering deeper reflection and empathy regarding the home-based living system and its practices.
