Cross-domain advantages: From journalist to coral grower

In this lecture, we were honored to invite Ms. Chen Ying-ling, Secretary-General and founder of Eco Angels, to share her experiences with us. Known as the “Coral Mom,” Ms. Chen began by reflecting on her personal life journey, describing how she transitioned from working as a journalist and in public relations and marketing to becoming actively involved in coral restoration. Her story demonstrates how interdisciplinary skills can be applied to environmental protection in meaningful ways. She pointed out that today’s oceans are facing multiple challenges, including marine debris pollution, overfishing, and climate change. These threats have led to coral bleaching in coral reefs—often referred to as the “tropical rainforests of the ocean”—which signals severe ecological stress. To address the loss of marine habitats, she and her organization have transformed abandoned abalone ponds into coral restoration sites and invited the public to visit these locations to learn about intertidal ecosystems and marine biodiversity, thereby strengthening public engagement in conservation efforts. In addition, Ms. Chen has successfully collaborated with corporations to support restoration projects and has promoted marine education through summer camps and environmental education programs, helping conservation awareness take root among younger generations.
