Humanities and Arts Lectures:The Ethics of Leisure and Boredom: Living Humanely in Modern Capitalism
Difference between gaspilage(浪費) and consumption(消費) • "This explains why THERE ARE NO LIMITS TO CONSUMPTION. If consumption were indeed what it is naively assumed to be, namely a process of absorption or devouring, a saturation point would inevitably be reached." (The System of Objects, p.204) • The objects of consumption is a sign, an information and an idea. "To become an object of consumption, an object must first become a sign." (The System of Objects, p.200) Ex. LIKEs of SNS. • Since there is no limits to consumption, there is no satisfaction. This explains the enigmatic status (4): I do not have free time but I am bored. • If you wish to be a gaspilleur, the consumer society makes you a consumer. • How can we can this?
