2026_1142 Learning Taiwanese Through Songs for Young Children
This session focused on how young children can learn Taiwanese through listening to and singing songs. The speaker drew on her own creative experience and used the album Where Is Spring? as an example to explain why nursery rhymes are an effective tool for learning Taiwanese. With their simple melodies, clear rhythms, and easy-to-remember lyrics, children can naturally acquire the language through listening and singing. Beyond language learning, nursery rhymes also connect to family memories and cultural heritage. When parents and children sing and listen to songs together, it not only supports learning but also strengthens emotional bonds. The speaker also discussed the development of Taiwanese nursery rhymes and how they are now presented through various forms, such as musical theatre, picture books, and children’s programs, making them more diverse and engaging. These approaches allow teachers to incorporate Taiwanese into daily classroom activities, increasing children’s exposure to and use of the language. Overall, the speaker emphasized the importance of preserving Taiwanese culture and expressed the hope of encouraging more people to engage with and learn the language through innovative and diverse methods.
