From U-Taipei to the world. How sports fuelled my journey to a global office.

This lecture featured Chang Chao-Chun, a former alumnus of the Department of Leisure and Sports Management at the University of Taipei and currently the Deputy Manager of Marketing Strategy at NIKE TAIWAN. He shared his experiences regarding future careers with current senior students, discussing how to overcome workplace setbacks and offering valuable advice to help them manage anxieties about the future. The speaker began by asking the students: Do you love sports? Most students majoring in Leisure and Sports Management raised their hands, but when the speaker asked again, "Those who are sure they want to work in this industry in the future, please raise your hands," the number of hands dropped drastically. Clearly, everyone seemed somewhat lost about future employment. The speaker then began sharing his experience: after graduating from university, he pursued a master's degree at a teachers' college, secured an opportunity to study at the University of South Carolina, worked as a team manager for an NCAA Division I team, and then returned to Taiwan to seek employment. The speaker repeatedly emphasized the importance of overcoming fear and trying hard. If you don't like something, it's okay to give up, but if you don't even have the courage to try, you won't have any opportunities. This is especially true in the sports industry. The process of studying, interning, and job hunting was inevitably quite painful, a point the speaker didn't deny, especially given the low salaries. However, his love for sports brought him a greater sense of accomplishment and positive feedback, allowing him to gradually accumulate experience and transform himself from a "sports enthusiast" into someone who "can survive in the sports industry." Next, the speaker shared some job opportunities and attributes within the sports industry, encouraging us to explore various avenues and leverage the greatest strengths of the Department of Leisure and Management—a passion for sports, a strong learning ability, and excellent teamwork skills—to navigate today's workplace environment where people are valued more than academic expertise. Finally, the speaker engaged in a Q&A session with the students, addressing many of their anxieties and questions about the future job market.
