Things you need to know about working with drones
This lecture focused on the rising star of modern space information technology—Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Working in the UAV field is far more complex than simply "operating a remote controller"; behind the glamorous journey of "from walking to flying" lies rigorous regulatory constraints, solid professional skills, and interdisciplinary applied thinking. First and foremost, "regulations and safety" are the absolute red lines for entering the UAV field. The lecturer emphasized that current civil aviation regulations impose extremely strict restrictions on UAV registration, operating licenses (such as basic professional licenses and surveying-grade licenses), and restricted airspace. Working with UAVs requires weather assessments, airspace searches, and equipment checks before every takeoff. This made me realize that the freedom to soar through the skies is built upon a high degree of discipline and legal responsibility. Secondly, "flight is merely a means; data is the core." For geography and history departments, drones are excellent carriers of spatial data. However, to transform aerial photographs into valuable orthophotos, 3D digital surface models (DSMs), or point cloud data, subsequent aerial surveying software processing, control point measurement, and error correction are the true core capabilities. The application of airborne LiDAR and multispectral cameras further demonstrates the enormous potential of drones in terrain change monitoring, agricultural surveillance, and the digital preservation of historical sites. Those wishing to pursue a career in this field in the future need not only to hone their flying skills but also to cultivate deep expertise in spatial information processing. Only by combining drone technology with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can one gain a bird's-eye view of the true pulse of the land amidst the wave of digital transformation.
