The Power of Storytelling & Public Speaking
This lecture featured Yu Hsuan, the founder of Tour Me Away, as the guest speaker. With extensive experience studying abroad, the speaker is also frequently invited to colleges and universities to share insights into the art of public speaking. The lecture, titled “Power of Storytelling,” focused on storytelling techniques and how to capture an audience’s attention through stories. The speaker began with a simple short story to help students understand that a good story does more than convey information; it also evokes emotional connections with the audience. Therefore, mastering storytelling techniques is essential. The speaker then introduced various techniques for making stories more vivid and engaging, including the effective use of pauses, role-playing, variations in volume, and adjustments in tone of voice. Through several video examples, students were guided to observe how speakers applied these techniques to make their stories more compelling. The speaker subsequently organized a group activity in which students practiced storytelling using the techniques they had learned. Through hands-on practice, students experienced how different ways of delivering a story could influence its impact on the audience. Finally, the speaker encouraged students to apply these techniques in future presentations and speeches, with the goal of improving their oral communication skills and stage presence through more expressive delivery. Through this lecture, students gained a deeper understanding of storytelling techniques. Following the speaker’s demonstrations and video analyses, students learned that techniques such as pausing, varying vocal volume, adjusting tone, and adopting different roles can make stories more vivid and engaging. The group practice also gave students the opportunity to apply what they had learned and reflect on their own communication styles through interactions with their group members. In future presentations and speeches, students can incorporate these techniques to communicate more naturally and persuasively, enhance their stage presence, and build stronger connections with their audiences.
