Storytelling in Action: From Picturebooks to Listening and Speaking

This lecture featured Ms. Chen Pei-Ying, an English teacher at Lujiang Elementary School in New Taipei City, who shared her practical experience in using English picture books to teach listening and speaking under the topic “From Picture Books to Listening & Speaking.” The session covered the practical steps of storytelling, including cover-page introduction, storytelling and performance techniques, and the design of follow-up learning activities that connect stories to real-life issues. In addition to demonstrating picture-book storytelling in person, the speaker shared a wealth of teaching resources and video recordings of actual classroom instruction. These materials guided students in anticipating potential challenges in classroom practice and discussing possible strategies for addressing them. The lecture helped pre-service teachers and bilingual teacher trainees develop a concrete understanding of English teaching in elementary school settings. Through the speaker’s demonstrations and simulated classroom scenarios, students were encouraged to adopt children’s perspectives and experience the pacing and interactive approaches involved in storytelling and story enactment. This process helped them strengthen their professional skills in storytelling and in designing English listening and speaking activities. Participants not only learned how to extend picture-book content into interdisciplinary lessons connected to real-life themes but also developed an understanding of how to prevent classroom crises and respond effectively to unexpected situations. Overall, the session successfully bridged educational theory and teaching practice.
