Applying Computational Thinking through Spreadsheet-Based Practice
This talk explores the practical application of computational thinking through the development of a spreadsheet-based university course scheduling system. Using an actual scheduling workbook as an example, the talk demonstrates how complex administrative tasks can be transformed into systematic and manageable data-processing procedures. The presentation begins by introducing the essential information involved in course scheduling, including courses, class groups, instructors, time slots, and classrooms. It explains how data classification, coding, and structured worksheet design can be used to establish a logically organized scheduling system. The talk then demonstrates the use of spreadsheet formulas, lookup functions, cross-worksheet references, and automated data processing to integrate course information, generate class timetables, instructor schedules, and classroom usage summaries, and assist in checking classroom allocations. Through this practical example, participants are introduced to key elements of computational thinking, including decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic thinking. The talk emphasizes that computational thinking is not only applicable to programming but can also be integrated into daily administrative management and data processing tasks, thereby improving work efficiency, data accuracy, and problem-solving skills.
