The Development of Reading

We invited Dr. Hsuan-Hui Wang from the National Taiwan Normal University to present the lecture, titled “An Introduction to Development of Reading” in the undergraduate course “Developmental Psychology”. All students in this course ranged from freshmen to senior years. Developmental Psychology examines human growth and development across the lifespan, focusing on the biological, cognitive, and socio/emotional processes that shape development. Reading required explicit acquiring and learning, and involved different aspects of cognitive development. Dr. Wang presented the Simple Model of Reading and introduced the components of reading. Then she presented the developmental model of reading from toddlers to adults. It was essential for educators and helping professionals to understand the differences between “learn to read” and “read to learn” stages. Dr. Wang also introduced some basic reading assessments and interventions for children possibly with reading difficulties.
