The lecturer shared their journey from university to entering the workforce, starting as an English tutor, then becoming a commentator for the Tour de Taiwan cycling race, and eventually working as an interpreter for the Kaohsiung City Government. The lecturer has reported on seven international cycling events, participated in the Tour de Taiwan 11 times, and covered the KOM race eight times, showcasing extensive experience in sports broadcasting. They also shared interesting stories from reporting in Qatar. This talk provided valuable insights into unfamiliar territories and proved highly beneficial for someone like me who is uncertain about future career paths. Embracing a versatile career, experiencing various facets of life, the most memorable aspect for me was the experience in cycling reporting. Despite the opportunity to travel worldwide, there were considerable sacrifices. Witnessing the challenges of live reporting, promptly summarizing ongoing events, and doing so in English, sometimes in mountainous terrains, instilled deep admiration for everyone in this profession. Additionally, I find the role of interpreters to be quite fascinating. Proficiency in English is a given, but the ability to comprehend different languages, translate on the spot, handle specialized terminology, and exhibit strong improvisational skills, even if unfamiliar, is commendable. Today's presentation introduced me to diverse professions, all sharing a common thread – language proficiency. Cultivating language skills is not just an option but a necessity. In conclusion, I express gratitude for inviting the speaker, broadening our awareness of diverse career options.
