Community Watch - Social Disparities in Health
In this course, students actually visit the Wanhua area and experience the local environment first-hand, including Bopiliao historical district, Qingcao Lane, Longshan Temple, etc., and through the explanations of the tour guide, they gain a deeper understanding of the historical background, changes in the business environment, and Through health or medical-related activities and events, this experience reinforces their focus on health inequalities and helps build professionalism. The alley street scene in Figure 1 shows that the area is gradually declining and becoming borderline. After the socio-economic structure changes, the aging population and the concentration of temples have made the surrounding area a symbol of insecurity, disorder and complexity of the old city. Figure 2 shows the street scene of Wanhua’s unique teahouse. Wanhua has nearly 400 teahouses and teahouses, which are small but crowded with ladies and customers. During the COVID-19 epidemic, the epidemic prevention situation was difficult to control, and infections derived from cluster gatherings in teahouses also occurred. According to the analysis of Taipei City's low-income households and middle-aged and elderly population, Wanhua District has "a lot of old people and a lot of poor people." This shows the uniqueness of the teahouse culture where people can accompany and chat as long as the consumption is cheap. Figures 3 and 4 show the current street scene of Wanhua’s commercial activities, including Qingcao Lane (Figure 3) and some businesses (Figure 4). This gives a glimpse of the characteristics of commercial activities in this area, but it also shows the relatively scattered store settlements today. Figure 5 shows the first rapid screening station in Taiwan, located in the Bopiliao historical district. It screened more than 8,000 people from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. every day for 36 days, and screened 451 confirmed cases. Figure 6 shows the barrier-free facilities in Bopiliao Historic District, which shows the care taken in facility design and planning to consider the needs of different groups.
