Start with self-healing: the experience and practice of intuitive art therapy

Art therapist Wu Xinzhi opened the door and explained to the students what the workshop will be about. Intuitive art therapy is a creative process of self-exploration. Through creation, we can explore with ourselves and help students prepare themselves to enter community practice in the future. Caregiving skills and self-healing dialogue through creation serve as important learnings for developing resilience in practice. Xinzhi Art Therapist invites each student to share what they care about most and what is most important in the group. Students are also invited to draw on a piece of 4-inch drawing paper using a pastel pen. Then, the Xinzhi art therapist guides each student to choose a position that feels comfortable to them. After the students are ready, the art therapist guides the students to adjust their breathing and feel their bodies. After that, the art therapist led the students to create on the drawing paper that was fully open, and created the feelings on the drawing paper through the feelings from the body. During the process, the art therapist will go to each student one by one to guide the students to share their exploration of creation. Through oral sharing and discussion, students can experience exploring the relationship between creation and themselves in a group. Finally, the students moved from their creative work to the middle of the classroom. The art therapist led the students to share the group process of this workshop, the experiences each person experienced, and their curiosity and questions about the intuitive art therapy group. Discussions can also be raised. During the interaction and discussion sessions, students’ curiosity and imagination asked questions and students’ positive feedback from the group, as well as feedback from art therapists’ practical experience, enhanced and inspired them to apply this knowledge to their own future social practice or Career development in progress.
