"Application of Dance Narrative Therapy in Elementary School Group Counseling: Emotional Expression, Flow and Social Skills"

From Thursday, August 1st to Friday, August 2nd, 2024, Professor Ying-Hui from the project team held a workshop titled "Application of Dance Narrative Therapy in Elementary School Group Counseling: Emotional Expression, Flow, and Social Skills" at the Zhongzheng Building, 3rd floor, Bo'ai Campus, Taipei City University. Professor Ying-Hui aimed to guide participants in becoming aware of their own emotions and interpersonal boundaries through Dance-Based Narrative Therapy (DBN). The goal was to equip participants with effective emotional communication and counseling techniques, which they could later apply to assist elementary school students in improving their emotional regulation and interpersonal interaction skills. The course was based on the concepts of Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) and Narrative Therapy (NT), explaining how to utilize movement elements generated through bodily motions in a playful and creative learning environment. In planning group goals and content for counselors, Professor Ying-Hui focused on the following key areas: Body-Emotion Connection: Understanding the foundational context linking body movements and emotions. Emotional Expression Awareness: Identifying and expressing inner emotions through dance movements. Group Dynamics and Interaction: Understanding how movements can enhance group dynamics and interactions. Creative Expression: Combining elements like music, rhythm, and movement to stimulate children's creativity and help them express emotions and inner worlds through dance. Group Structure and Practical Application: Learning to build group structures, set goals, and understand how these elements interconnect. Through these objectives, participants were expected to: Understand the foundational concepts of Dance Narrative Therapy: Grasp the relationship between body movements and emotions, and learn basic movement vocabulary (Laban Movement Analysis). Recognize body movements and emotions: Learn to identify emotional expressions in movement and help children recognize and externalize emotions through creative dance. Apply practical skills and techniques: Master the use of dance therapy techniques in elementary school group counseling, and design and implement effective small-group emotional counseling programs. The project team hoped the workshop would help participants develop professional skills and academic knowledge to promote social, physical, and mental well-being, as well as innovative practices. Furthermore, it aimed to inspire personal interest and awareness in bodywork, fostering future talent in expressive arts therapy, contributing to both personal growth and social feedback.
