2025 Picture Books and Me
1. Sun Hsin-Yu's Picture Book Introduction and Guide ● "A Day Trip" Winner of the 13th Xinyi Children's Literature Special Award, this wordless picture book uses two narrative lines to express the story from different perspectives. The inspiration came from the author's dream, and the scenes depict interactions between animals and humans, such as watching the sunset together, conveying a sense of warmth and peace. Since there are no words, the images are fragmented, and the story is told through the visuals. ● "Afternoon" Winner of the 13th Xinyi Children's Literature Award, First Prize, this story also uses two narrative lines. The upper part depicts a person riding a bicycle on the streets of Taipei, while the lower part shows a pet at home. Through the simultaneous depiction of different spaces, it illustrates the daily connection between humans and animals. The transition from grayscale to color symbolizes changes in emotions and warmth. ● "Beijing Trip" This is a black-and-white wordless book with colored characters. It depicts the cityscape of Beijing, but due to its inclusion of politically sensitive events, such as social movements, it was removed from shelves in 2023. However, this led to the author collaborating with international publishers, opening up new creative possibilities. ● "Fire Safety Knowledge Book" This book introduces fire safety knowledge with an interactive design that allows children to learn by flipping the pages. Although it was more costly to produce, its educational and interactive features make it highly effective. ● "Homecoming" The story begins with the author's family history, told from the perspective of a tree. It narrates the experience of the author's parents moving to Taiwan and touches on issues of identity and cultural heritage. This book is not just about moving or traveling; it’s a process of "seeking roots." 2. The Journey of Picture Book Creation and Survival The author shared his experience and challenges in starting picture book creation. Through collaborations with public departments and local promotions, he worked with the Taipei Cultural Bureau to introduce the Beitou Hot Spring Festival and its history, creating the picture book "Old Suitcase, Chatter" based on the theme of military dependents' villages. He also participated in the New Taipei City Cultural Bureau’s "New Taipei City Picture Books" project, which covered themes such as the unique species of New Taipei and the history and future of land reclamation, incorporating teaching materials, drama, and e-books. Additionally, he collaborated with the Hsinchu County Cultural and Social Affairs Bureau, launching "The Flower Grandpa Dance Troupe", encouraging elderly participation in activities. 3. The Creative Journey and International Perspective The author has gained valuable insights from his travels abroad, which have enriched his picture book creations. He has participated in various domestic and international awards, such as the Golden Tripod Award and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, which not only increased his income and collaboration opportunities but also enhanced the international visibility of his works. Moreover, the author collaborated with overseas publishers to translate his works into simplified Chinese, Japanese hiragana, and other languages, expanding his readership. 4. Exploring Picture Book Creation and Market Trends The author pointed out that the number of people reading physical books is decreasing, making the picture book market increasingly difficult. Many creators rely on government support to continue their work. Although AI has been on the rise in recent years, it still cannot match human emotions and creativity.
