Finding the power of self-healing and treatment in art - the power of art therapy
This course aims to help students understand the theoretical foundations and practical applications of art therapy, recognize its positive impact on mental health, and enhance sensitivity to diverse therapeutic approaches. By exploring the role of art therapy in the psychological care of individuals with physical and mental disabilities, students will develop interdisciplinary integration skills, laying a foundation for future work in special education, social welfare, or mental health services. Art therapy originated in the United States and was initially used to help veterans cope with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It later evolved into a complementary treatment for psychological conditions such as anxiety, autism, and depression, assisting individuals in relieving stress, enhancing self-awareness and emotional expression, and improving quality of life. Art therapy takes many forms, including painting, collage, music, drama, and photography, and is suitable for individuals with trauma experiences, high-stress lifestyles, cognitive impairments, and autism. Research shows that an appropriate amount of cortisol can improve focus and energy supply, and art therapy helps regulate its secretion, reducing stress responses. Art is a natural healing method that requires no special talent—anyone willing to try and integrate it into their life can benefit from its therapeutic effects.
