Cultural Prescription Notes - Easy-to-Read Mobile Teaching Kits for Cultural Centers and Dementia-Friendly Training Workshops
This course aims to cultivate students' sensitivity to the needs of individuals with dementia and intellectual disabilities in terms of information comprehension, social participation, and cultural engagement. Through practical workshops, the course also enhances students' ability to design and apply easy-to-read information. The course begins by introducing the definitions and differences between dementia and intellectual disabilities, helping students develop accurate care concepts and understand the importance of respect and empathy. The instructor points out that, compared to the past approach of "compliance or deception" with patients, today the emphasis should be on respectful communication and the comprehensibility of information. The course then introduces the Easy-to-Read Design Guidelines and the Easy-to-Read Cultural Toolkit, guiding students in the creation of easy-to-read manuals. The course highlights key principles such as the use of clear language, intuitive layouts, and visual aids. The lecture also discusses future trends in easy-to-read information, including digitalization and multimedia applications, and emphasizes that these tools should not be limited to specific disability groups, but should also be extended to diverse populations such as the elderly and new immigrants. Finally, through group exercises and hands-on practice with STEEP dementia interaction techniques, students experience real interactions with elderly individuals living with dementia. They learn how to communicate with respect and effectively using appropriate non-verbal cues and simplified language. Overall, the course integrates theory with practical application, enhancing students' interdisciplinary skills and professional competence in culturally responsive care.
