2025 The Application of Drawing Developmental Stage Theory in Early Childhood Developmental Assessment
Drawing is an innate form of expression in children, and this lecture provided meaningful insights into how their artwork reveals their inner world. Starting with a mindful creative activity, the speaker emphasized that drawing serves as a projection of both thought and emotion—each piece of art holds significant meaning. The speaker connected children’s developmental drawings with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, analyzing how children’s artwork at different stages—particularly during the scribbling and pre-schematic phases—reflects their cognitive, emotional, and physical development. Through their drawings, we can gain a clearer understanding of a child’s actual developmental age and psychological needs. In conclusion, the speaker highlighted three key takeaways about children’s drawings: 1. Where there are lines, there is movement. 2. Where there is color, there is emotion. 3. Where there is form, there is concept. As students and practitioners in early childhood education, we are reminded of the importance of creating a safe and nurturing environment for children, listening genuinely to their thoughts, and valuing each piece of spontaneous artwork—because these drawings are, in essence, the child’s way of communicating with us.
