【USR】Integration and Diffusion of Medical-Elderly Care and Higher Education Perspectives: Constructing a Social Prescription and Linking Worker Innovation and Development Hub - Experiences from a Residential Facility for Adolescents
This class session featured a special guest lecture by psychiatrist Dr. Po-Ching Chou and a youth who had previously lived in a residential facility, sharing their insights and experiences regarding "life in care homes." Dr. Chou, drawing from his professional expertise, discussed common psychological challenges faced by adolescents in residential settings—such as trauma, disrupted attachment, and low self-esteem. He emphasized the crucial role of companionship and trust in supporting youth recovery. While acknowledging the protective functions of institutional systems, he cautioned that without emotional connection, meaningful change is difficult to achieve. Following this, the youth shared his personal journey in the facility—from initial distrust and resistance to gradually finding stability through the support of teachers and social workers. He spoke candidly about feelings of confusion and avoidance, but also about how being truly listened to helped him begin reimagining his future. In closing, he encouraged students pursuing helping professions to look beyond surface behaviors and seek to understand the stories behind them. The heartfelt and sincere sharing provided university students with a more concrete understanding of the lived realities and psychological dynamics within residential institutions, fostering deeper reflection and empathy toward care systems and practice.
