What’s the Use of Studying Mathematics Education?

Mathematics education is not only about problem-solving; it is about understanding how mathematics is created, thought, and applied. While mathematicians often leave behind only the results, mathematics education fills the missing link—the process of thinking. This lecture explored the meaning and value of studying mathematics education from three perspectives: curriculum content, learning approaches, and career development. At the curricular level, it covers topics such as mathematics curriculum design, children’s conceptual development, psychology of mathematical learning, teaching methods, technology integration (AI), history of mathematics, and mathematical games. Students learn to use various media—objects, diagrams, technology, and language—for adaptive learning. At the learning level, the focus is on understanding how students think and on helping them enjoy learning mathematics through conceptual thinking, reasoning, and creativity. Students are guided to explore new ideas from basic concepts and to develop independent learning abilities. In terms of career prospects, the training in logical reasoning and systematic thinking prepares graduates for teaching, educational research, textbook editing, instructional material development, and related professions. Ultimately, studying mathematics education teaches us how to teach and how to learn—transforming thinking into the art of teaching and bringing mathematics back to the heart of human reasoning and daily life.
