Higher Education Deepening Lecture Series –Wang Jing "Dun, Body, Emotion, and Language: The Golden Triangle"

When standing on stage to perform, which comes first—body, emotion, or language? This course invites participants to explore this “golden triangle.” Drawing on years of theatrical experience, the instructor guides students to begin with bodily awareness, discovering how posture, breath, and movement can naturally evoke genuine emotions. Language then becomes the means to transmit this inner energy, allowing performance to move beyond mere physical actions and become a living presence of emotion and story on stage. Throughout the course, participants first practice tuning into their bodies, noticing how subtle movements create shifts in sensation and perception. They come to understand that emotion flows from the body, rather than being something forced or fabricated. Next, through language exercises, they learn how to precisely communicate the energy initiated by the body to the audience, creating a performance state that emerges in the moment and resonates dynamically. The instructor emphasizes that body, emotion, and language do not function in a linear hierarchy; instead, they form a triangle that mutually supports and propels one another. In post-class reflections, students shared that the course helped them rediscover themselves and reconnect with the embodied experiences of dancers and performers. It is not merely a training in technique, but an inward-out practice of truly inhabiting oneself on stage. By the end of the class, participants gained more than performance methods—they learned how to stay in authentic flow on stage, respond in the moment, and bring greater vitality and power to their performances.
