Seminar on Teaching Design for Mandarin Textbooks

Teacher Tsai Hsiang-ling guided pre-service teachers in exploring teaching design cases for Mandarin language education: Unit 2, “Little Language Soldiers,” Lesson 5, “Singing the Opposite Tune.” Teacher Tsai emphasized that teaching cross-talk should not merely involve rote memorization of lines. Instead, it should guide students to experience the humor woven from contrasting phrases through “oral expression” and “listening appreciation.” The ultimate goal of teaching extends beyond literacy acquisition to cultivate artistic creativity and cultural appreciation in daily life. This workshop successfully elevated teacher trainees from “users” to ‘designers’ in their perspective on textbooks. Through the case study of “Singing the Opposite Tune,” participants not only mastered teaching techniques for crosstalk scripts but also gained profound insight that “instructional design must be grounded in a deep understanding of the curriculum context.”
